Jerk Sauce Flavor Review
By GeoffWald
One of my favorite condiments is jerk sauce but there are so many out there...which one do you choose? If you're like me you're looking for a sauce with flavor so I decided to test a few and see which one I thought presented the best "flavor profile".
The sauces I chose to review are:
KC Masterpiece
Lowry's
And an up and coming sauce company called Kilimanjaro Foods
Here's what I found.
KC Masterpiece Caribbean Jerk Sauce- I found this one somewhat disappointing. It had a sweet, almost pineapple-like flavor with no real semblance of spice. Also, the flavor left my mouth almost immediately. As soon as it hit my tongue, it was almost gone. In my opinion, the jerk sauce is very good for people who don't like spice or rich flavors.
Lowry's Caribbean Jerk Sauce- This one came closer in that it contained some spice and produced a mild "hot" effect. The flavor lingered longer than KC Masterpiece's did but I found the flavor profile two-dimensional. There was the spicy taste and another flavor that I can only describe as a "smoky" taste but there wasn't much dimension or life to this sauce.
Kilimanjaro Foods Original African Jerk Sauce- I can honestly say I was very impressed by this sauce! It was spicy without being "hot" and had the dimension I was looking for. The flavors in this sauce were rich, bold and diverse and, though I can't identify what they are, I know I tasted around 5 or 6 distinct spices that really made it pop in my mouth. The flavor lingered long enough for me to really savor the taste but wasn't overpowering.
All in all, each of these jerk sauces has their good points but if you're looking for a bold, flavorful sauce, Kilimanjaro is the way to go. Unfortunately, being a young company, it isn't available nationwide but you can find it on the internet attheir website. Check out their Original African Jerk Sauce for yourself!
